Children see and hear differently than adults. They are easily distracted and are not yet able to recognize dangers. Because of their size, they can see less - and are easily overlooked. Their sense of perception only develops gradually.
Road traffic challenges children with all their senses. They have to see, hear, communicate with others, give signals, judge and make decisions. At kindergarten age, this quickly overwhelms them. Traffic demands skills that they do not yet have. This is why children are rarely alone in traffic until they start school.
